Walking with Giants at The Valley of the Saints!

If you looking for a great place to stay that enables you to easily explore Brittany, our gorgeous guesthouse The Place to B&B is an excellent base from which you can discover all this wonderful region has to offer.

For example, just a twenty-minute drive away you will find The Valley of the Saints, near Carnoët. This remarkable site will appeal to history enthusiasts, art lovers, those who love the outdoors as well as fans of Breton legends and stories.

The Valley of the Saints is the work of an association created in 2009 by local man Philippe Abjean whose dream was to erect 1000 statues of the saints, remaining as a souvenir of Breton legends for hundreds of years to come.

A guided tour of the site starts with a visit to the workshop where around 30 sculptors work on enormous slabs of granite. Each artist has a month to complete his or her piece in whichever style they prefer: abstract, classical, contemporary. They find inspiration from the legends and stories behind each saint that have been passed down the generations. The tour continues up a gentle slope to the ancient Roman hillfort, situated high up with a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. All around you will see statues silently contemplating the view. It’s a strange feeling to walk among these giants – many have a look in their eyes that is quite disconcerting or even just a little scary!

Kids will love this place – running about in the wide open space or guessing the names of all the weird and wonderful objects carved into each granite statue. A large car park is available (payment on exit) and an on-site shop offers all kinds of souvenirs. There is also a sheltered area for picnics.

A great place for a successful day out!
